I recently had the opportunity to spend a fantastic morning capturing photographs at Brougham Street Nursery in Skipton, and what an incredible experience it was! As a photographer specialising in natural, candid photography, I strive to highlight the essence of an educational setting, and Brougham Street Nursery is filled with moments worth capturing. Nestled in the heart of Skipton, the nursery stands out as a Local Authority Maintained Community Nursery School, meaning it has non-profit status, which ensures that the focus is always on quality early years education rather than profit.

From behind the camera lens, I was delighted to document the wonderful balance between indoor and outdoor learning spaces. The setting is divided into three age-specific rooms: the Baby Room (3 months to 2 years), the Toddler Room (2-3 years), and the Pre-school Room (3-4 years), as well as a wonderful Sensory Room. Each room is carefully designed to cater to the developmental needs of the children, and there are so many little touches that make these spaces feel magical. As a photographer, it’s always a pleasure to work in environments where children are genuinely engaged and excited by their surroundings - it certainly makes my job much easier!

One thing that truly struck me was the way Brougham Street integrates its outdoor provision into daily learning, with each room having its own outdoor space. Whether I was taking photos of children exploring the mud kitchen or gathering around a frog they'd just found, the enthusiasm for outdoor play was palpable. This was further emphasised by the nursery’s commitment to Forest School principles, with many staff members trained to lead these outdoor, nature-based learning sessions.

The bright, airy indoor spaces were equally inspiring to photograph. Each room is designed to be calming yet stimulating, with plenty of natural light that made the children’s activities shine. Whether they were engaged in sensory play or crafting with water, paint, and playdough, the joy on their faces was something I couldn’t wait to capture. As a photographer, having such a dynamic and well-thought-out setting made my job easier and allowed me to really showcase what Brougham Street Nursery has to offer.

Currently, Brougham Street Nursery has spaces available in their Pre-school Room for children aged 3-4, and I would highly recommend this wonderful setting to any parents. Thank you so much to the staff and children for making me feel so welcome - it was such a fun morning photographing everything going on!
